You can check out our current Guide for New Donkey Owners with some useful information about basic donkey care here. An electronic copy of the official Donkey Care Handbook from the Donkey Sanctuary of England, and a current generic version of our adoption agreement, foster application, and adoption application, respectively, can be viewed and/or downloaded below. (Please note: Adoption or foster applications do not constitute any commitment or contract; they're simply for our information and a first step in our adoption or foster process!)

DONKEYS/MULES CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION OR FOSTERING SUMMER/FALL 2025
PECOS BILL
This big, beautiful john mule is 20 years old, about 15 hh tall at the withers, and has seen it all. He was a pack mule and a riding mule, and he has been ridden in parades. He will not pack dead animals, though. Pecos came to us in June as an owner surrender from Alamogordo.
Despite his age, Pecos Bill still has a lot of life in him. Although he shouldn't be overworked, he would really like to have a job rather than just become a companion to another horse or mule. He has a lot of energy and needs good fencing, preferably pipe fencing! He stands quietly for saddling and bridling, stands still for mounting and dismounting, walks with “walk” command and slight nudging w/heel. He turns easily with reining, stops with “ho” and pulling back on reins. He will back up, but just a couple steps at a time. (When he first came to us, he tried walking right over a person to get through a gate.) No bucking, no kicking, but he does seem to have some separation anxiety, doesn’t like to be too far from his pasture buddies. We're looking for a sensitive, understanding home for this guy, he deserves it! He needs someone who will set clear boundaries in a friendly, but determined manner and have the right kind of set-up for him. Pecos Bill has his own custom made saddle. He is fully vaccinated, recently had a dental and Coggins test, and was trimmed three times in the past 3 months to catch up with previous hoof overgrowth prior to his arrival. He is a happy, friendly guy and wants a person to love him. He gets along with every equine (although some are afraid of him at first). Pecos Bill's adoption fee is $1,500, which includes the saddle. (Or, if you have your own saddle that would fit him, we can adjust the fee accordingly.) Please download and fill out an adoption application if you're interested in adopting Pecos Bill. Depending on the outcome of further training, his fee may be raised a bit more. |
MARCELA & ASCIENTA
iMarcela and Ascienta are a closely bonded pair of middle aged jennets originally from Texas. Ascienta is about 19 years now and Marcela about 15. When we first rescued them in 2012, they were completely nongentled, and they spend the next 5 years as cattle donkeys at a large ranch in Quemado, NM. We believe that this is where they started bonding, as they came with a large group of other donkeys rescued from the slaughter pipeline in Texas. The cattle donkeys were returned to us in 2017, and that's when Marcela and Ascienta's ground training began. They were adopted out after a while to a small farm with various kinds of smaller livestock in Tome and stayed there for about 4 years until they had to be returned due to divorce and related economic issues. They received more ground training then and had two brief adoptions in 2023 and 2025, respectively, both of which were short due to couple separation (in one case) and adopter health issue requiring a relocation where the donkeys could not be accommodated.
Because of the busy life that these two girls have already had, we are looking for a home that will be longterm or even forever. If your economic or health related situation is not very stable, you will not be the right fit this time around. While the girls can always come back here, moving around too much is not the right kind of life for them. The girls need a home with owners who will not overfeed them, because Marcela, in particular, has been very obese at times. Their hooves will need proper trimming at least every 2 months, and they need annual vet checks, including dentals. These girls have been around a lot of livestock and are good with dogs (as long as the dogs don't harass them). They halter well but are currently in training again for leading and trailer loading. Their adoption fee as a pair is $1,500, which includes recent Coggins, dentals, vaccinations, hoof trims, worming, and ground training. Please download and fill out an adoption application if you're interested in adopting Marcela and Ascienta. |
