History: Jackson was an owner surrender from Espanola, who had been rescued by some kind people from a situation in which he was accommodated in a 12x12 stall for an indefinite time while still being an intact jack. His people had him gelded and tried finding him a new home. However, something happened thsat first night at his new home that had the new owner claim Jackson had tried to attack her and only let off when she fainted. This incident got Jackson back to his rescuers, but it also caused him to come close to being put down, because attacks on humans are seen as a serious issue in the horse world, almost as serious as in the world of dog ownership, and there were a number of people recommending that he be put down at the time. Fortunately, his rescuers came across our website and contacted us. The rest is history.

Personality: Because of the accusations that Jackson was subjected to in his past, and because of how close he came to being put down due to those accusations, Jackson is not generally up for adoption. He is, however, a favorite of our volunteers and visitors because of his friendly, affectionate behavior and love of people. We believe that he never did attack anyone. He was pushy when we first met him, simply because he hadn't had much training and spent most of his life in very confined surroundings. But he always loved people and never exhibits any aggression toward humans. He also loves horses very much, and he is especially bonded with his molly mule Mina. Jackson loves to go to events, and he won a second place ribbon in the donkey games at the Cerrillos Fiesta in 2025. When he is not preoccupied with food, Mina or people, Jackson loves wrestling with Toby, the other donkey gelding in his herd, and despite his age, you can see the two of them chasing and wrestling especially early in the morning and toward the end of the day.

Diet: Despite Jackson's age - and the fact that he broke off some of his front teeth - he does well on a diet of bermuda grass hay and barley straw. His mixed herd consisting of a mule, a hinny, and three donkeys has a salt block and occasionally gets a tub of Equilix minerals. Sponsor Jackson here!
