SASHA

Jennet Age: c. 19 Arrival: 2017 Current status: In training RECENT SPONSORS: ASSIGNED VOLUNTEERS: History: Sasha originally was saved on our behalf in Texas in 2012. She benefited from our cattle donkey adoption program in place at the time, which likely saved her from slaughter. In the early years of our operation, we arranged for about 26 abandoned donkeys from Texas to go to a large cattle ranch in Quemado, NM, to work as guard donkeys to protect the young calves from coyotes and other predators. Small groups of the donkeys were assigned to different herds in different parts of the ranch. There were no fences, and the donkeys enjoyed a largely "free life", with more protected conditions at a large barn during the winter months. Sasha stayed there for about 5 years and then entered our ground training program. Personality: Due to some lingering anxieties, she is not well qualified for adoption at this time, though we do not rule out that she can still find the right home at some point. We continue to do ground work with Sasha as time permits to make her as comfortable as possible for farrier and veterinary care. Sasha is very social with other donkeys and has at times been close with Sheila or Joe. She has remained in Sundance's herd after we reunited Sheila with her old beau Toby, but we will likely move Sasha in with some of the older donkeys again in the near future. Diet: Despite her age, Sasha does well on a diet of bermuda grass hay and barley straw. Her herd has a salt and trace mineral block and occasionally gets a tub of Equilix minerals.
